Photo of the Week: Staring Up at a Bamboo Canopy

Look up through the bamboo at the Juk Nok Won Bamboo Forest in Damyang, South Korea.

The sound of wind through a bamboo forest is one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. More quiet and peaceful than the wind through a regular forest, the peaceful sound of rustling bamboo leaves makes it easy to appreciate the beauty of nature.

I visited the Damyang Bamboo Forest, known as Juknokwon in Korean, twice during my time in South Korea, and of all the wonderful places throughout the country, I don’t think there was anywhere I felt more relaxed than in Damyang: walking under the canopy of towering bamboo, looking at the strangely beautiful carvings people had cut into the wood, and watching the bamboo sway as the leaves rustled in the wind.

The photo above is one of my favorites from my time in Damyang.  As the sun pierced through the canopy above, the wind whispering through the leaves high above, it was hard to imagine a more beautiful or peaceful place.
